ATP Vienna quarter-finals: Carlos Alcaraz sweeps Jack Draper to surge into Austrian semi-finals

Precision and power carry Alcaraz past British challenger

Carlos Alcaraz took another commanding step toward a maiden Erste Bank Open title on Friday afternoon, 30 October, sweeping past Britain’s Jack Draper 6-4, 6-4 inside a sold-out Wiener Stadthalle. The 23-year-old Spaniard delivered an exhibition of high-tempo hard-court mastery, requiring just 84 minutes to dispatch one of the most dangerous unseeded players in the draw and reach his eighth tour-level semi-final of the season.

Draper arrived with plenty of confidence after notable hard-court victories, but Alcaraz took control of the baseline from the opening game. Standing close to the baseline and taking Draper’s swinging left-handed serve early, Alcaraz manufactured the first set’s decisive break in the seventh game with a breathtaking running forehand passing shot down the line. The four-time Grand Slam champion won 81 percent of his first-serve points, firing 29 winners and committing only 11 unforced errors across the encounter.

Blockbuster Saturday semi-final against Zverev awaits

The second set unfolded in similar fashion, as Alcaraz grabbed an immediate service break with a delicate drop shot followed by an overhead smash. Draper fought determinedly, saving two match points with booming serves to hold for 4-5, but Alcaraz closed out the contest with an unreturnable 210 km/h delivery out wide, extending his indoor hard-court winning streak to seven consecutive matches.

The victory sets up a titanic Saturday semi-final against top seed Alexander Zverev, who earlier survived a high-octane battle with Andrey Rublev, prevailing 7-6 (4), 6-4 in one hour and 52 minutes. With the ATP Finals in Turin fast approaching and crucial ranking points at stake, Vienna’s penultimate day promises to deliver the highest quality tennis the autumn indoor season has to offer.
