São Paulo GP Preview: Fresh off Antonelli's coronation, F1 heads to Interlagos for high-stakes Sprint and Constructors' showdown

Antonelli’s historic coronation echoes into Brazil

The Formula 1 circus arrived at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace on Monday, 2 November, with the sport still buzzing from Sunday’s seismic events in Mexico City. By crossing the line in second place behind Charles Leclerc, 20-year-old Kimi Antonelli shattered Sebastian Vettel’s long-standing record to become the youngest World Drivers’ Champion in Formula 1 history.

While the individual championship trophy has been claimed by the Italian rookie with three rounds to spare, the stakes remain stratospheric as the grid prepares for the Grande Premio de São Paulo. The battle for the 2026 World Constructors’ Championship is entering its defining chapter between Mercedes and Scuderia Ferrari.

Mercedes lead Ferrari by 133 points (607 vs 474). A strong showing at Interlagos, where a maximum of 59 points are up for grabs across Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix, could allow the Brackley-based squad to mathematically secure their first constructors’ crown since 2021.

Interlagos promises chaos and Sprint drama

Few venues on the motorsport calendar produce greater unpredictability than Interlagos. The undulating anti-clockwise circuit features the iconic Senna S downhill chicane, rapid elevation shifts, and a notoriously capricious microclimate that often delivers flash rainstorms across the Sao Paulo hills.

Ferrari arrives with substantial momentum following Leclerc’s commanding victory in Mexico. Team principal Frederic Vasseur confirmed that Ferrari will introduce their final aerodynamic floor update of the season in Brazil, aiming to enable Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to challenge Antonelli and George Russell directly. For Hamilton, an honorary Brazilian citizen who has won three times at Interlagos, the weekend represents an emotional pilgrimage as he seeks his maiden victory in Ferrari scarlet.

With Sprint qualifying on Friday and the 24-lap Sprint on Saturday offering crucial points before Sunday’s main event, Interlagos is set to deliver another unforgettable spectacle in the championship finale.
