VidantaWorld Mexico Open round 2: Austin Smotherman fires 65 to grab 36-hole lead in Mexico
Bermuda winner reaches 11-under par at VidantaVallarta; Raul Pereda and Aaron Rai sit two back entering moving day.
Smotherman stays flawless on coastal Mexican layout
Austin Smotherman showed no signs of slowing down on Friday, 30 October, firing a flawless six-under-par 65 in the second round of the 2026 VidantaWorld Mexico Open to seize the solo 36-hole lead at 11-under-par 131. Fresh off his dramatic third-playoff-hole victory over Seamus Power at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship five days earlier, the 32-year-old American dismantled the Greg Norman Signature Course at VidantaVallarta with textbook ball-striking, carding six birdies and avoiding a single bogey in gusty coastal winds.
Smotherman’s remarkable run brings him to a cumulative 23-under par across his last six competitive rounds on the PGA Tour. Beginning his Friday on the back nine, he struck his iron shots with pinpoint accuracy, rolling in birdie putts of 15 feet at the 12th and 20 feet at the 14th before adding four more birdies on his inward nine. “When you get into a rhythm like this, you just trust your routine and let the course come to you,” Smotherman remarked following his round.
Pereda and Rai lead pursuit as 36-hole cut falls
First-round leader Raul Pereda gave the home galleries plenty to cheer once again, backing up his opening 65 with a solid three-under 68. The Mexican favorite mixed four birdies with a lone bogey on the par-four eighth, finishing the day in a share of second place at nine-under 133 alongside England’s Aaron Rai, who carded a smooth 67. Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo sits solo fourth at seven-under 135 after signing for his second consecutive 67.
The 36-hole cut fell at one-under-par 141, leaving 68 players to battle across the weekend for the $1,080,000 winner’s prize and 500 vital FedExCup Fall points. For bubble contenders fighting to secure their full PGA Tour cards inside the top-125 cutoff for 2027, Saturday’s moving day represents a career-defining test under the tropical Pacific sun.
