WWT Championship Preview: Following Pereda's historic triumph, PGA Tour arrives in Cabo with FedExCup cards on the line

Mexican golf basking in Pereda’s breakthrough

The energy surrounding Mexican professional golf reached unprecedented heights on Monday, 2 November, as the PGA Tour landed in Los Cabos for the 2026 World Wide Technology Championship. Just 24 hours earlier at VidantaVallarta, 29-year-old Raul Pereda created history by firing a closing five-under 66 to become the first Mexican player to win the Mexico Open in the tournament’s PGA Tour era.

Pereda’s emotional two-shot victory over Austin Smotherman captivated the sporting world, vaulting the Veracruz native into the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking. The victory came with life-changing perks: a two-year PGA Tour exemption through 2028, 500 FedExCup Fall points, and guaranteed invitations to the 2027 Masters, PGA Championship, and Players Championship.

As Pereda arrived at El Cardonal at Diamante to a hero’s welcome from tournament organizers and local junior golfers, he embraced his new role as the standard-bearer for Mexican golf.

High stakes on Tiger Woods’ coastal canvas

The host venue for this week’s 8.2 million dollar championship is El Cardonal at Diamante, the first golf course designed by Tiger Woods to host an official PGA Tour event. Measuring 7,452 yards along the rolling sand dunes of Cabo San Lucas, the layout features generous landing areas off the tee coupled with complex green complexes influenced by coastal winds.

While Pereda carries celebratory momentum, intense pressure surrounds the rest of the field. With only three tournaments remaining in the 2026 FedExCup Fall season, players are engaged in a high-stakes scramble for top-125 status, which guarantees fully exempt PGA Tour cards for 2027.

Smotherman, who held the 54-hole lead in Puerto Vallarta before finishing solo second, heads straight to Cabo determined to complete the job. Alongside England’s Aaron Rai and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo, the field in Los Cabos is primed for another thrilling week of desert-meets-ocean golf.
