Sinner's fifth major: two tiebreaks, then the champion's weight
6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4. Zverev had Roland Garros. Sinner still had Wimbledon.
Why this final matters
Alexander Zverev won Roland Garros. The Channel Slam is the sentence people reach for when a clay champion walks onto Centre Court. Jannik Sinner had not won a major in 2026 yet: Djokovic took him out in the Australian Open semis, heat exhaustion took him out in the French Open second round. Wimbledon was the argument that he is still the best player in the world.
What actually happened
CBS: 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4. First break of the match at 5-3 in the third, Zverev long in rallies. Championship point after a 23-shot rally, Sinner’s forehand. One hundred major match wins. Second straight Wimbledon. Fifth Slam.
The first two sets were serve. The last two were the favourite remembering the job.
What it changes
Sinner has the grass. Zverev has the clay. The hard-court year is still open. The US Open, as of 8 September, has not named a men’s champion. Sinner’s name is not on that draw’s last eight in the pieces we locked. The Wimbledon trophy is.
