Why this race matters
Formula 1 put a Grand Prix on a new Madrid circuit five days after Monza. New tracks scramble the form book. A championship leader with 267 points is supposed to be careful. Kimi Antonelli won anyway.
What actually happened
Formula1.com: Antonelli 1:34:23.754 from grid 2. Max Verstappen +4.351. Lando Norris +5.089 after starting on pole in 1:31.824. Charles Leclerc +29.116. George Russell +29.829 with the fastest lap, 1:35.587 on lap 49.
The Athletic: Norris led by 6.2 seconds on lap 14 when Lance Stroll stopped at Turn 20. The virtual safety car came out. Norris was too far around the circuit to pit. Antonelli was not. Norris recovered to hound Verstappen, locked his brakes on lap 55, and finished third.
Lewis Hamilton reported he had no brakes. He fell from fourth and retired on lap 6. Wikipedia lists the same DNF: Hamilton brakes, Stroll brakes, Sergio Perez water pressure, Carlos Sainz collision damage.
What it changes
