Why this race matters
Home races are supposed to go wrong. This one went from nineteenth to first, and Italy had not won its own Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. No one had won from as far back as 19th since John Watson from 22nd at Long Beach in 1983. Kimi Antonelli did it in 1:51:15.281 at Monza on 6 September.
What actually happened
Pierre Gasly took Alpine’s first pole. Russell led by lap two. Antonelli climbed through a 53-lap race, passed his teammate late, and took the flag. Russell second by 3.857. Verstappen third by 14.718. Norris fourth, Piastri fifth, Hamilton sixth. Leclerc, Alonso and Stroll did not finish. Fastest lap Antonelli, 1:23.504. What it changes
