ATP 500 indoor swing opens in Vienna and Basel: Alcaraz faces tricky Khachanov test

Star-studded fields assemble across Europe

The ATP Tour’s autumn indoor sprint reaches maximum intensity on Monday, 26 October, with the simultaneous launch of two premier ATP 500 tournaments: the Erste Bank Open in Vienna and the Swiss Indoors in Basel. With vital qualification points for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin at stake, the world’s top men’s players have assembled on fast indoor hard courts across Austria and Switzerland.

In Vienna, world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz commands immediate attention in the opening round, drawing a formidable test against powerful baseline striker Karen Khachanov. Alcaraz is seeking to build match rhythm following recent training blocks, while top-seeded Alexander Zverev faces Spanish young gun Martin Landaluce. Defending champion Jannik Sinner was forced to withdraw due to a knee issue, leaving the bottom half open for 2022 champion Daniil Medvedev, who travels directly to Vienna after capturing his 25th career title on Sunday in Almaty.

Basel welcomes marquee contenders

Meanwhile across the border at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, the Swiss Indoors tournament commences with an equally stacked lineup. Novak Djokovic headlines the draw alongside American contenders Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, as players vie for the 500 ranking points on offer. With the Paris Masters arriving next week followed immediately by Turin, early-round slip-ups in Vienna or Basel could alter the entire year-end top ten hierarchy.
