Baycurrent Classic Championship Sunday: Max Homa takes 54-hole lead into Yokohama finale

Homa’s Saturday surge alters the equation

Moving Day in Japan belonged to Max Homa. The six-time PGA Tour winner seized solo possession of the lead at the inaugural Baycurrent Classic with a sparkling 5-under-par 66 on Saturday, climbing to 14 under par (199) across 54 holes at Yokohama Country Club.

Homa gained over three strokes on the field with his irons on Saturday, birdieing four of his first seven holes to overhaul overnight leaders Keith Mitchell and Jacob Bridgeman. With the par-71 West Course bathed in bright autumn sunshine, Homa’s precision and putting composure established him as the man to beat entering Sunday’s final round.

The final group showdown

Playing alongside Homa in Sunday’s marquee pairing at 10:48 AM JST are Jacob Bridgeman and Keith Mitchell. Bridgeman carded a gritty 2-under 69 to sit in solo second at 13 under par (200), hunting the first PGA Tour victory of his professional career. Mitchell, who shared the 36-hole lead with Bridgeman, posted a 1-under 70 to remain within striking distance at 12 under par (201).

For Bridgeman, Sunday offers a life-altering opportunity: a maiden victory carries 500 FedExCup Fall points, a 1.44 million dollar winner’s check, and guaranteed invitations to all four major championships in 2027.

Matsuyama electrifies the home galleries

The loudest roars of Moving Day echoed across the tree-lined fairways for local hero Hideki Matsuyama. The 2021 Masters champion fired five birdies on his back nine to post a tournament-best 66, leaping into a tie for sixth at 10 under alongside Justin Thomas.

With only four strokes separating Matsuyama from Homa, thousands of Japanese spectators are expected through the gates at Yokohama Country Club to cheer on a Sunday comeback. Ben Kohles and Zach Bauchou also loom three shots back at 11 under par. With firm greens and tight pin positions awaiting the field, Championship Sunday promises an unforgettable climax in Japan.
