Djokovic reaches Beijing final after Medvedev default. Alcaraz into Tokyo decider.

Why this match matters

The two headline ATP 500 events in Asia have settled their finalists for Tuesday 6 October. At the China Open in Beijing, Novak Djokovic advanced to his seventh tournament decider in extraordinary circumstances when Daniil Medvedev was defaulted. Across the water at the Japan Open in Tokyo, Carlos Alcaraz rallied from a set down against Jaume Munar to book a championship clash with Jiri Lehecka. Both finals precede the players’ immediate flight to the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

What actually happened

In Beijing, Djokovic led 7-5, 5-3 and 15-15 in the second set when Medvedev struck a ball in frustration that bounded off the back wall and injured a front-row spectator, prompting an immediate match default. Alex de Minaur joined Djokovic in Tuesday’s final after Hubert Hurkacz retired while trailing 6-4, 3-2 due to an injury. In Tokyo, top seed Alcaraz dropped the opening set before finding his range to defeat Munar 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in two hours and 14 minutes. Earlier, Lehecka brushed past Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 6-2.

What it changes

Djokovic stands 32-0 in completed Beijing matches and targets his first title of the autumn swing against De Minaur, against whom he holds a 2-1 hard-court edge. In Tokyo, Alcaraz faces Lehecka in pursuit of his fourth title of 2026. With Jannik Sinner sidelined from Shanghai with a knee injury, the winners in Beijing and Tokyo carry prime momentum into the penultimate Masters 1000 event of the season.
