Austin qualifying showdown: Leclerc paces practice as Antonelli chases pole
Ferrari topped Friday sessions at COTA with Antonelli just 0.042 seconds back. Saturday qualifying sets the grid.
Grid battle looms in Texas
The stage is set for a fierce qualifying battle at the 2026 United States Grand Prix on Saturday, 24 October, at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. Following two practice sessions on Friday that saw Charles Leclerc push his Ferrari to the top of the timing sheets, the grid now prepares for Free Practice 3 and the high-pressure one-lap showdown at 16:00 local time. Leclerc edged championship leader Kimi Antonelli by just 0.042 seconds during qualifying simulations on soft tires in FP2.
Mercedes enter Saturday in a position of supreme strength. Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship with 340 points, 102 clear of teammate George Russell (238). A pole position and race victory on Sunday would give the Italian prodigy his first theoretical chance to seal the world championship. Russell, who finished fourth in Friday practice, must outqualify his teammate to keep his championship hopes alive heading into the season’s final five rounds.
Ferrari and Red Bull mount challenge
Ferrari’s strong straight-line speed and precision through COTA’s Sector 1 esses gave Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton genuine confidence heading into Saturday’s shootout. Meanwhile, Singapore winner Max Verstappen lurks in third position for Red Bull, finishing just over a tenth off the top spot in FP2. With track temperatures expected to exceed 38 degrees Celsius, tyre preparation and traffic management on the 5.513 km layout will prove critical in determining who captures pole position for Sunday’s 56-lap Grand Prix.
