Austin race day at COTA: Antonelli starts on pole as Verstappen lines up second

Antonelli delivers under Texas pressure

Kimi Antonelli delivered a sensational qualifying lap on Saturday afternoon at the Circuit of the Americas, securing pole position for the 2026 United States Grand Prix with a lap of 1:34.035. The Italian teenager produced purple sectors through the fast sweeps of Sector 1 to edge Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds, sending Mercedes into celebration ahead of Sunday’s 56-lap Grand Prix in Austin.

The pole position places Antonelli in prime position to extend his commanding advantage in the drivers’ championship. Holding a 102-point lead over teammate George Russell (340 to 238 points), Antonelli can mathematically seal his first Formula 1 World Championship on Sunday if he takes victory and Russell finishes outside the top five. Russell qualified sixth after struggling with rear-end instability during his final Q3 run.

Front-row fireworks and high tyre degradation

Verstappen will line up alongside Antonelli on the front row, seeking his fourth victory at COTA. Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar produced an outstanding lap to qualify third, just 0.215 seconds off pole, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton occupy the second row in fourth and fifth.

With air temperatures forecast near 30 degrees Celsius and track temperatures expected to exceed 40 degrees, tyre strategy across COTA’s abrasive 5.513 km layout will be decisive. Most teams anticipate a two-stop strategy on medium and hard compounds, with the run up the hill into Turn 1 offering Verstappen and the chasing pack their best chance to disrupt Antonelli’s march to glory.
