Why Madrid week matters: 66 points, a new circuit, ten races left

Why this preview matters

Formula 1 is putting a Grand Prix on a new Madrid circuit five days after Monza. New tracks scramble the form book. A 66-point lead does not. Kimi Antonelli has 267. George Russell has 201. Lewis Hamilton has 191. That is the championship as of 6 September.

What we can print

The Tag Heuer Spanish GP is 11-13 September at the Madring. ESPN’s calendar lists it as the next round. Wikipedia’s Italian GP page says the same. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were cancelled earlier in the year. The season still has a long tail: Baku, a rearranged Bahrain in Malaysia on some calendars, Singapore, Austin, Mexico, Sao Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar, Abu Dhabi.

What we will not print

A Madrid winner. A pole. A safety car. Come back after Sunday.
