Mexico City GP preview: Kimi Antonelli on threshold of historic Formula 1 World Championship
Mercedes prodigy needs ninth place at Hermanos Rodriguez to seal maiden title; Antonelli confirms he will keep car #12.
Altitude, fiesta, and a championship coronation
The Formula 1 paddock lands in Mexico City this week for Round 19 of the 2026 championship, where 20-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli stands on the verge of sporting immortality. Following his commanding pole-to-flag victory at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, the Italian sensation holds 365 points, establishing an insurmountable 123-point lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell with only 125 points left in play.
The title equation heading into Sunday’s 71-lap contest at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is beautifully simple. If Antonelli crosses the finish line in ninth position or higher, he will become the youngest Drivers’ World Champion in the 76-year history of Formula 1, eclipsing the previous mark set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010. Even if Antonelli fails to score, Russell must win the Grand Prix to prevent the championship from being decided on Sunday afternoon.
Honoring Senna with car number 12
Speaking in the Mexico City paddock on Wednesday, Antonelli settled another burning question by confirming he has no intention of adopting the traditional number 1 on his car for 2027. Antonelli explained that he will proudly keep his number 12, paying tribute to his karting origins and his lifelong racing idol, Ayrton Senna.
The 2,285-meter altitude of Mexico City presents a unique technical headache for engineers, with low air density reducing downforce and placing immense strain on turbochargers and brake cooling. Red Bull and five-time Mexico winner Max Verstappen will aim to play the role of spoiler, but the spotlight belongs undeniably to Antonelli as he prepares for his date with motorsport destiny inside the roaring Foro Sol stadium section.
