F1 Americas Countdown: Norris Singapore masterclass trims Verstappen gap as Lawson joins RB grid

Why this one matters

When the checkered flag fell over the glittering Singapore night sky on Sunday, Formula 1 entered an entirely new reality. Lando Norris did not merely win at Marina Bay; he dismantled the field with a 20.945-second margin of victory over three-time champion Max Verstappen.

The performance confirmed what paddock insiders had suspected for weeks: the McLaren MCL38 is currently the most complete, versatile racing machine on the planet. With Oscar Piastri finishing third, McLaren added 40 points to their tally, stretching their Constructors Championship lead to 41 points over Red Bull (358 to 317).

More crucially, Norris reduced Verstappen’s Drivers Championship cushion to 52 points. With six Grands Prix and three Sprint races remaining, a total of 180 points are still up for grabs across the upcoming Americas triple-header in Austin, Mexico City, and São Paulo.

Liam Lawson’s high-stakes arrival

While McLaren celebrated their commanding 1-3 finish, the Red Bull stable made headlines of their own on Monday by formally announcing a mid-season driver swap:

  • Lawson steps in for Ricciardo: New Zealander Liam Lawson will take over Daniel Ricciardo’s seat at sister team RB starting at the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas. The 22-year-old impressed during a five-race substitute stint in 2023, scoring points in Singapore.
  • Audition for the main seat: Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko and team principal Christian Horner have made no secret that Lawson’s final six races serve as a direct audition for a potential 2027 seat alongside Verstappen, putting Sergio Perez on notice.
  • Red Bull’s technical scramble: Engineers at Milton Keynes are working around the clock to understand the severe balance and understeer issues that plagued the RB20 in Singapore. Red Bull plans to bring a major aerodynamic update package to Austin in a bid to arrest McLaren’s surge.

The championship math ahead of Austin

For Norris, the path to the championship is now tangible. If the Briton wins all remaining six Grands Prix with the fastest lap, he will become World Champion regardless of where Verstappen finishes.

Formula 1 now enjoys a four-week operational pause before the engines fire up again on October 18 at COTA. The fight for both world titles is alive, fierce, and primed for an unforgettable climax in the Americas.
