Friday night at Marina Bay proved that the battle for the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix will be decided by fractions of a second between McLaren and Ferrari.
Under the blaze of 1,600 floodlights and through heavy 30-degree night humidity, Lando Norris extracted every ounce of downforce from his McLaren MCL39 during qualifying simulations in Free Practice 2. Hooking up all three sectors through the bumpy 4.94-kilometer street layout, the British driver clocked an eye-watering 1:30.727 to take the top spot on the Friday timesheets.
Charles Leclerc, who had topped the twilight opening session in FP1 with a 1:31.763, pushed his Ferrari to the absolute limit. Threading his machine inches from the concrete barriers through turns 13 and 14, the Monegasque driver stopped the clock at 1:30.785, trailing Norris by just 0.058 seconds. Carlos Sainz completed the top three for Ferrari, 0.629 seconds adrift.
For Mercedes and championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Friday was an exercise in long-run calibration. The 19-year-old Italian focused heavily on the medium and hard compound tires, posting the fourth-quickest time (1:31.402) while showing competitive degradation numbers against teammate George Russell. With track evolution accelerating and overtaking virtually impossible, Saturday night’s qualifying session will be decisive.
