Muchova and Mensik take the mixed doubles million
6-3, 1-6, [10-6] over Bencic and Cobolli. First Slam title for both. 26 August, Arthur Ashe.
Why this one matters
The US Open now plays mixed doubles as a two-day, million-dollar event that starts the tournament. On 26 August the trophy went to Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik, an all-Czech pair, 6-3, 1-6, [10-6] over Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli.
What actually happened
They saved two match points from 7-9 in the semi-final tiebreak against Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev, then won the last four points of that match. In the final they rolled three straight from 1-1 in the match tiebreak. Mensik closed with an ace on a third championship point. First Slam title in any discipline for both. Prize money $1 million.
Muchova had just played a Wimbledon final in July and lost it. New York gave her a title anyway, in a different key.
What it changes
Mensik called it his first time standing there. The singles tournament was only beginning. As of 8 September the singles trophies are still unclaimed. This one is in the cabinet.
