NFL MNF: Jared Goff achieves historic 18-for-18 perfect passing game as Lions outduel Seahawks 42-29
Detroit quarterback breaks all-time NFL record for completions without an incompletion, adding two passing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown.
Why this one matters
In the entire century-long history of the National Football League, no quarterback had ever attempted at least 15 passes in a regular-season contest without a single ball hitting the turf. On Monday night at Ford Field, Jared Goff rewrote that standard with an exhibition of pure, cold-blooded precision.
Goff finished 18-for-18 through the air for 292 yards, two passing touchdowns, and zero interceptions. In doing so, he shattered the previous NFL record held by Kurt Warner, who completed 10 of 10 passes for Arizona in 2005. To punctuate the historic evening, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson dialed up a third-quarter trick play where wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown took an end-around toss and fired back across the field to Goff, who hauled in a 7-yard touchdown reception.
The resulting 42-29 victory snapped a six-game Detroit losing streak against Seattle and handed first-year Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald his first loss of the season.
An offensive fireworks display
Monday Night Football turned into a track meet between two potent offenses combining for 71 points and 905 total yards:
- Goff’s perfection under pressure: Facing a Mike Macdonald defense renowned for disguised blitzes, Goff stood firm in the pocket. He connected on intermediate strikes to Jameson Williams for a 70-yard touchdown and hit Amon-Ra St. Brown on timing routes across the middle.
- Detroit’s two-headed ground attack: Jahmyr Gibbs supplied electric burst with 78 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while David Montgomery provided bruising short-yardage muscle with 40 yards and a touchdown plunge.
- Seattle’s relentless counter: Kenneth Walker III kept the Seahawks alive with 80 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while Geno Smith threw 56 passes for 395 yards. But Seattle’s bid for a comeback ended when safety Kerby Joseph snared an interception in the back of the end zone with two minutes left.
NFC North race intensifies
The victory moves Dan Campbell’s Lions to 3-1, keeping them within striking distance of the 4-0 Minnesota Vikings in a fiercely competitive NFC North division.
Detroit has now proven they can win via punishing ground dominance, as they did against Arizona, or via historic aerial wizardry. As Goff walked off the Ford Field turf to deafening chants of his name, the Lions served notice to the rest of the league: their championship window is wide open.
