49ers 24-20 Rams: Goal-line stand seals Thursday Night Football thriller in Santa Clara
Brock Purdy fires two touchdown passes before defense halts Matthew Stafford inside the 10-yard line
Why this one matters
Thursday Night Football delivered an unrelenting divisional brawl at Levi’s Stadium as the San Francisco 49ers edged the Los Angeles Rams 24-20 to take command of the NFC West.
Brock Purdy opened the evening in command, orchestrating scoring drives on two of San Francisco’s first three possessions. A 16-yard touchdown strike to Deebo Samuel down the seam gave the 49ers an early advantage, followed by a trademark red-zone connection to George Kittle just before the half. Purdy completed 19 of 26 passes for 254 yards and zero turnovers.
The decisive points arrived early in the fourth quarter. Facing third-and-goal from the four-yard line, Kyle Shanahan dialed up a misdirection handoff to Christian McCaffrey, who broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and lunged over the goal line. McCaffrey finished with 86 rushing yards and 44 receiving yards on 22 total touches.
Yet Matthew Stafford refused to capitulate quietly. The veteran passer led an 80-yard touchdown drive to pull Los Angeles within four points with 3:15 remaining. After forcing a quick punt, the Rams marched down to the 49ers’ 7-yard line with 42 seconds on the clock. On fourth-and-goal, Stafford looked for Cooper Kupp in the flat, but cornerback Deommodore Lenoir read the release and batted the pass away, sending Levi’s Stadium into celebration as San Francisco improved to 3-1.
