NFL Week 4 preview: 49ers and Rams reignite rivalry on Thursday Night Football
NFC West battle at Levi's Stadium tests short-week recovery after Philadelphia closes Week 3 on Monday night.
Why this one matters
With Philadelphia’s 24-20 Monday Night Football victory over Dallas officially in the books, the NFL calendar waste no time turning the page. Week 4 opens immediately on Thursday night with one of the fiercest rivalries in modern football: the Los Angeles Rams visiting the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium.
This represents the second meeting between the two franchises this season following their historic international matchup in Melbourne, where San Francisco rolled to a 27-7 victory behind three Brock Purdy touchdown passes. But returning to Northern California on just three days of rest creates an entirely different tactical landscape. Both Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay understand that early divisional victories often determine home playoff seeding come January.
Purdy versus Stafford under the lights
San Francisco enters the contest seeking consistency. Purdy continues to distribute the ball efficiently to George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, and Christian McCaffrey, but the 49ers defense must contend with a Rams aerial attack that remains explosive when Matthew Stafford finds protection.
For Los Angeles, Kyren Williams has shouldered the rushing load, but Stafford’s connection with Puka Nacua is the engine that can disrupt San Francisco’s zone coverage. Stafford was pulled late in the Melbourne defeat and will be motivated to avenge that performance in prime time before a hostile Santa Clara crowd.
