Norris wins Hungary, then Zandvoort. McLaren's counter has a double.

Why this stretch matters

McLaren needed a stretch that looked like a challenge, not a cameo. Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix on 26 July in 1:39:56.180, Verstappen second, Antonelli third. He then won the Dutch Grand Prix from pole on 23 August in 2:04:44.859, Antonelli second, Russell third.

What actually happened

ESPN’s 2026 recap lists Verstappen as a DNF at Zandvoort, his home race. The orange crowd did not get the story it came for. It got a McLaren one. Sky Sports has Norris’s two wins in sequence, summer break in the middle.

Antonelli still left the Netherlands with the championship lead. Two weeks later he would win Monza from 19th. The counter was real. So was the leader.

What it changes

A Mercedes year with a McLaren subplot is more interesting than a Mercedes year alone. Norris has two trophies in a row. Antonelli still has the points. Madrid is next.
