Bermuda final round showdown: Power and Smotherman share 54-hole lead
Seamus Power and Austin Smotherman lead at 14 under. Blanchet and Hirata contend in Sunday ocean gale.
Co-leaders emerge through Atlantic winds
The stage is set for a dramatic Sunday finish at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, with Ireland’s Seamus Power and American Austin Smotherman sharing the 54-hole lead at 14-under-par at Port Royal Golf Course. Both players navigated gusting 20 mph winds off the Atlantic Ocean during Saturday’s third round, managing key par saves on the perilous coastal stretch of holes 15 through 17.
Power, a proven PGA Tour winner at this venue, fired a composed 3-under 68 on Saturday to climb into the co-lead. Smotherman joined him atop the leaderboard with five birdies on his back nine, carding a 4-under 67. The co-leaders hold a slender one-stroke cushion heading into Sunday’s final 18 holes, where 500 FedExCup Fall points and a winner’s paycheck of $1.08 million await.
Blanchet, Hirata and Conners lurk in chase
Right behind the leaders, opening-round record setter Chandler Blanchet and Japan’s Kensei Hirata sit tied for third place at 13-under-par. Blanchet battled through tough conditions to shoot a 1-under 70, while Hirata stayed patient with a 1-under 70 of his own. Canadian star Corey Conners, the highest-ranked player in the tournament at world No. 61, sits just two shots back at 12-under.
With forecasts calling for increased gusts and potential squalls during the afternoon wave on Sunday, Port Royal’s iconic par-3 16th hole over the turquoise waters will once again serve as the ultimate crucible. Accuracy off the tee and disciplined putting on Bermuda greens will decide who hoists the trophy in Southampton.
