VidantaWorld Mexico Open: Raul Pereda shoots 66 to become first Mexican PGA Tour winner on home soil

Home hero delivers historic breakthrough in Puerto Vallarta

The shores of VidantaVallarta witnessed one of the most emotional scenes in modern PGA Tour history on Sunday, 1 November, as 29-year-old Raul Pereda fired a sensational five-under 66 to win the VidantaWorld Mexico Open. Pereda finished at 17-under 267, defeating 54-hole leader Austin Smotherman by two strokes to become the first Mexican player to win the national open since the tournament joined the PGA Tour schedule.

Trailing Smotherman by one shot entering the final round, Pereda embraced the thunderous backing of more than 28,000 spectators chanting “Viva Mexico” across every fairway. The Veracruz native made his move on the inward nine, matching Smotherman’s birdie on the 12th before seizing the outright lead with a stunning 22-foot birdie putt on the par-four 15th.

When Smotherman pulled his drive into a greenside bunker on the 16th and failed to get up-and-down, Pereda struck the killer blow on the par-three 17th. With the wind gusting off the Pacific, Pereda fired an eight-iron to five feet and calmly poured in the birdie putt to open a commanding two-shot cushion.

Tears and mariachi music greet Mexico’s new champion

Pereda played the demanding 18th hole with consummate professionalism, laying up safely and rolling a 25-foot birdie putt to within inches of the cup. After tapping in for par, Pereda dropped his putter, covered his face with his hands, and wept as family members and fellow Mexican golfers rushed onto the green to douse him with champagne.

The victory completely transforms Pereda’s career. In addition to a winner’s check of 1.45 million dollars, Pereda secures a two-year PGA Tour exemption, guaranteed spots in the 2027 Masters, PGA Championship, and Players Championship, and a leap inside the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking.
