VidantaWorld Mexico Open preview: Smotherman brings Bermuda momentum to $6M FedExCup Fall test
PGA Tour heads to Greg Norman layout in Vallarta as players fight for pivotal 2027 tour cards.
From the Atlantic reefs to the Pacific surf
The PGA Tour FedExCup Fall campaign shifts from the windswept cliffs of Bermuda to the sun-soaked Pacific coast of Mexico this week for the 2026 VidantaWorld Mexico Open. Hosted at the scenic Greg Norman Signature Course at VidantaVallarta, the $6,000,000 tournament represents a pivotal proving ground for players battling to secure their livelihood on the world’s premier golf circuit.
No player arrives in Jalisco with greater momentum than Austin Smotherman. The 32-year-old American captured his second PGA Tour title of October on Sunday, outlasting Ireland’s Seamus Power on the third playoff hole at Port Royal Golf Course. After both men tied at 16-under-par, Smotherman produced a sublime 8-foot par save under pressure to claim the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Smotherman now seeks back-to-back victories as he anchors an international field in Vallarta.
The high-stakes autumn scramble
While Smotherman plays with freedom after locking up a two-year winner’s exemption, the true drama at VidantaVallarta surrounds the FedExCup Fall bubble. Players ranked between 100th and 125th are fighting for the top-125 cutoff that guarantees full playing privileges for the 2027 PGA Tour season, while those finishing 126th through 150th will receive conditional status.
Measuring 7,456 yards, the Norman course demands both length off the tee and pinpoint precision into sprawling paspalum greens guarded by meandering river hazards. Contenders including Corey Conners, Seamus Power, and Mexican favorites will look to take advantage of receptive scoring conditions. With life-changing tour exemptions hanging in the balance, every putt over the next four days carries immense weight.
