VidantaWorld Mexico Open round 1: Raul Pereda leads at VidantaVallarta as Smotherman opens with 66

Pereda electrifies home galleries at VidantaVallarta

Mexican golf celebrated a storybook opening round on Thursday, 29 October, as Veracruz native Raul Pereda fired a scintillating six-under-par 65 to claim the solo 18-hole lead at the 2026 VidantaWorld Mexico Open. Playing the windswept Greg Norman Signature Course at VidantaVallarta, the 28-year-old local favorite delighted huge galleries following his group along the Ameca River, rolling in seven birdies against just one dropped shot.

Pereda’s iron play was extraordinary in the tricky coastal breeze, gaining 3.8 strokes on the field in approach play alone. He capped his stellar day on the par-five 18th, striking a 240-yard three-wood across the water hazard to 18 feet and comfortably two-putting for birdie. The solo lead provides Pereda with a dream platform as he battles to secure full PGA Tour status for the 2027 season.

Smotherman continues blistering autumn form

Sitting just one shot off the pace in a tie for second are England’s Aaron Rai and in-form American Austin Smotherman, both carding opening-round 66s. Smotherman arrived in Mexico brimming with confidence following his thrilling third-playoff-hole victory over Seamus Power at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship on Sunday. The Californian showed no signs of tournament fatigue, opening his round with three consecutive birdies and navigating the tricky paspalum greens with effortless poise.

With 500 FedExCup Fall points and a winner’s check of $1,080,000 on the line, the pressure around the top-125 cutoff is palpable. Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo and England’s Matt Wallace remain firmly in contention after signing for four-under 67s. As sea breezes intensify over the weekend, VidantaVallarta promises to deliver an exhilarating autumn shootout under the Pacific sun.
