Premier League MW7: Brighton stun Tottenham 3-2 with sensational three-goal second-half blitz

Why this one matters

Matchweek 7 of the Premier League delivered its most dramatic spectacle on Sunday at the Amex Stadium, where Brighton & Hove Albion authored an unforgettable comeback to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime following first-half strikes from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison, Fabian Hürzeler’s side looked utterly dismantled. Yet in an electric 18-minute spell after the break, the Seagulls scored three unanswered goals to claim all three points and climb into fourth place on 14 points.

The result marks the first time in Premier League history that Brighton have trailed by two or more goals at halftime and gone on to win the match.

An 18-minute second-half whirlwind

Whatever words Hürzeler delivered at the break transformed his players into a relentless pressing machine:

  • Minteh initiates the surge (48’): Just three minutes after the restart, Destiny Udogie failed to clear Kaoru Mitoma’s low cross, allowing Yankuba Minteh to lash a left-footed strike past Guglielmo Vicario.
  • Rutter muscle and finesse (58’): Ten minutes later, Georginio Rutter collected a pass from Mitoma, shrugged off two defenders with formidable power, and squeezed a low drive into the bottom corner.
  • Welbeck heads the winner (66’): With Tottenham reeling, Rutter hooked a looping cross back into the six-yard box. Veteran forward Danny Welbeck timed his run perfectly, leaping above Micky van de Ven to head home his fourth goal of the campaign.

Contrast in trajectories

The victory cements Brighton’s position in the top four with four wins, two draws, and just one defeat from their opening seven fixtures under 31-year-old manager Hürzeler.

For Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham, the collapse represents a bitter pill. Spurs have now dropped ten points from leading positions this season, leaving them lingering in the relegation zone with just two points from six matches.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge, with Noni Madueke canceling out Chris Wood’s opener before James Ward-Prowse was shown a red card.
