Premier League MW7 Sunday: Arsenal blank Forest 2-0 to chase City
Saka and Havertz strike at the City Ground as Gunners respond to City's 3-1 win over Ipswich.
Arsenal respond to City’s Saturday statement
The pressure was squarely on Arsenal when they kicked off at the City Ground on Sunday afternoon. Twenty-four hours earlier, Manchester City had stretched their unblemished start to seven consecutive victories with a 3-1 win over Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s side answered with total composure. Bukayo Saka broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, cutting inside his marker and bending a low strike past Matz Sels. Kai Havertz settled matters in the 68th minute, rising unmarked to head home a corner delivered by Declan Rice. The 2-0 victory lifts Arsenal to 18 points (6-0-1), keeping them three points behind City at the summit.
The table takes shape after seven rounds
Elsewhere on Sunday, third-placed Brighton edged Crystal Palace 2-1 at the Amex Stadium to reach 16 points (5-1-1). Saturday’s fixtures had already witnessed Brentford defeat Liverpool 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium, leaving Liverpool ninth on 9 points, while Everton and Chelsea shared the points in a 1-1 draw on Merseyside.
Matchweek 7 concludes on Monday evening when Tottenham host Coventry City in North London. For now, the Premier League summit remains a two-horse sprint between Pep Guardiola’s flawless Manchester City and Arteta’s relentless Arsenal.
