Bournemouth storm Old Trafford with 3-0 rout: Liverpool down Brighton as MW8 concludes
Cherries punish sluggish United with clinical finishing. Liverpool advance to third with 2-0 win over Seagulls.
Cherries conquer the Theatre of Dreams
AFC Bournemouth delivered another tactical masterclass at Old Trafford on Sunday, 25 October, dismantling Manchester United 3-0 in front of a stunned home crowd. Andoni Iraola’s well-drilled side took advantage of United’s defensive disjointedness, opening the scoring in the 37th minute through a precise low finish from Rayan. Marcus Tavernier doubled the advantage five minutes before halftime with a composed strike from the edge of the area.
United dominated possession in the second half but created few clear-cut openings against Bournemouth’s compact back five. Ryan Christie added the final blow in second-half stoppage time, finishing off a rapid counter-attack to complete the rout. The victory lifted Bournemouth to 13 points (4-1-3) into the top six, level with Chelsea, while Manchester United dropped to tenth on 10 points after their fourth defeat of the campaign.
Liverpool climb to third as City and Arsenal remain locked
Elsewhere on Sunday, Liverpool took care of business at Anfield, seeing off high-flying Brighton 2-0. An own goal by Pascal Gross in the 17th minute put the Reds ahead before Alexander Isak tucked away his third goal of the season four minutes later to secure all three points. The win moved Arne Slot’s men into third place on 15 points, leapfrogging Chelsea and Brighton.
With Matchweek 8 now concluded, Manchester City and Arsenal sit deadlocked at the summit of the Premier League table on 21 points each (7-0-1), following Saturday’s shock upsets that saw Aston Villa topple City 2-1 and Tottenham defeat Chelsea 2-0. The title race heads into November with only two points separating the top four contenders.
