Premier League MW9: Cole Palmer strikes winner as Chelsea edge Newcastle 2-1 at Stamford Bridge
Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer fire Blues to hard-fought victory to pull level on points with Liverpool in top four.
Palmer magic illuminates Stamford Bridge
Cole Palmer added another sensational chapter to his growing Chelsea legend on Sunday afternoon, 1 November, driving home a superb winner to lift Enzo Maresca’s side to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
The contest began at a blistering pace before 39,812 spectators. In the 18th minute, Chelsea unlocked the visitors with a lightning counterattack. Palmer initiated the move with a visionary 50-yard through ball from his own half to release Pedro Neto down the left flank. Neto squared the ball across the face of goal, where Nicolas Jackson arrived at pace to tap past Nick Pope for his sixth league goal of the season.
Newcastle responded with intensity and restored parity on 32 minutes. Former Chelsea defender Lewis Hall surged into the penalty area and delivered a pinpoint low cross for Alexander Isak to slide home from close range.
Blues defense withstands frantic Newcastle barrage
Chelsea needed just two minutes of the second half to reclaim the advantage. Intercepting a loose pass in midfield, Romeo Lavia quickly found Palmer 40 yards out. The England international drove purposefully through the heart of the Newcastle defense, stepped onto his favored left foot on the edge of the area, and unleashed a ferocious drive that beat Pope at his near post.
Eddie Howe threw on Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy in search of an equalizer, but Chelsea center-backs Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana held firm against an aerial bombardment during seven tense minutes of stoppage time.
The victory lifts Chelsea to 16 points through nine matches, drawing level with Liverpool in fourth place and keeping them firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification.
