Majors are supposed to belong to the names on the world ranking. On 19 July a 39-year-old from New Zealand birdied the 18th at Royal Birkdale and became Champion Golfer of the Year. Ryan Fox is the third Kiwi to win a men’s major. That is not a cute fact. That is the story.
What actually happened
Rounds: 72-68-62-68 = 270, ten under. Cameron Young 271 after a Sunday 64. Sam Burns 272. Tommy Fleetwood and Scottie Scheffler tied fourth at 273. The Saturday 62 tied the men’s major record for lowest round. CBS called the 36-hole comeback the largest by position to win a men’s major.
He began Sunday two behind Burns. He birdied 16 to tie Young at nine under. The 18th had played 161 strokes over par for the field. Fox hit the fairway, the approach to about 12 feet, and the putt. Purse $17.75 million, winner $3.2 million.
What it changes
The last men’s major of 2026 has a new name on it. Scheffler still had the FedEx Cup to play for in August. Fox had the jug. Both sentences are true.
