Shanghai Masters final: Davidovich Fokina beats Jodar for the title
ATP result: 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 on Stadium Court. The all-Spanish final followed upsets of Zverev and Medvedev.
The final the draw actually produced
The ATP results page for Sunday, 18 October, lists the Rolex Shanghai Masters final on Stadium Court as finished in 2 hours 27 minutes. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the 25th seed, beat Rafael Jodar, the 12th seed, 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. Umpire: Greg Allensworth.
It is an all-Spanish final because Saturday’s semifinals did not go to the seeds. Davidovich Fokina beat Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in 2 hours 2 minutes. Jodar beat Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour 44 minutes. Jodar, 20, was the youngest Shanghai finalist in the tournament’s history and was playing his first Masters 1000 final. He began the season ranked 168th and is now ranked 13th.
What it means for the No. 1
Zverev is still the year-end world No. 1. He won the French Open and the US Open, and Jannik Sinner is out for the rest of the season. After the semifinal he told reporters a break was necessary and that he would check his fitness before Vienna, which begins on 24 October. Medvedev, the 2019 Shanghai champion, did not get the rematch the preview had pencilled in. The trophy went to Davidovich Fokina, in his second Masters 1000 final after he was runner-up in Monte Carlo in 2022.
