Shanghai Masters Round 2: Hubert Hurkacz shocks Novak Djokovic in straight sets
Polish star snaps eight-match losing streak with 6-4, 6-3 victory as Zverev and Shelton reach round of 32.
Why this shock reverberates
The biggest upset of the autumn hardcourt swing occurred on Friday in Shanghai. Hubert Hurkacz entered Qizhong Stadium with an 0-8 lifetime head-to-head record against Novak Djokovic. Two sets later, the 27-year-old Polish star walked off court with a dominant 6-4, 6-3 victory, dealing the four-time champion his earliest exit ever at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
How Hurkacz dismantled the champion
Hurkacz put on a serving clinic from the opening game. He hit 14 aces, won 84% of his first-serve points, and did not concede a single break of serve across 78 minutes of play. Djokovic, who arrived in Shanghai having won the China Open crown in Beijing on Tuesday, looked fatigued during long baseline exchanges and produced 26 unforced errors.
Elsewhere in the second round, second seed Alexander Zverev held off Chinese wildcard Yibing Wu 6-4, 7-6 (4) in front of an electric home crowd. American Ben Shelton battled past Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6 (6), while Japanese qualifier Rei Sakamoto earned a career-defining win by eliminating Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4.
How the draw opens up
Djokovic’s early departure alters the complexion of the bottom half. Players like Shelton, Karen Khachanov, and Adrian Mannarino now see a clear pathway to the quarterfinals. Hurkacz advances to face Arthur Rinderknech in the round of 32 on Sunday.
