Shanghai Masters Round of 32: An open draw after Novak Djokovic's seismic exit

Hubert Hurkacz's straight-sets upset reshapes the tournament as Zverev and Shelton seek the title.

Shanghai Masters Round of 32: An open draw after Novak Djokovic's seismic exit

Why the Shanghai draw is transformed

The Rolex Shanghai Masters has entered unchartered territory. When Hubert Hurkacz walked off Center Court on Friday having dispatched four-time champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, he did more than snap an 0-8 losing streak against the legend: he blew the entire 2026 tournament bracket wide open.

The Hurkacz masterclass

Hurkacz’s victory was a clinic in aggressive, high-percentage hardcourt tennis. Landing 84% of first serves and hammering 14 aces, the Polish star did not surrender a single break point across 78 minutes of play. For Djokovic, coming straight off a taxing title run at the China Open in Beijing, the physical toll proved insurmountable as he suffered his earliest defeat in Shanghai history.

Who capitalizes in the round of 32

With the top seed in the bottom half gone, an immense opportunity beckons for contenders. Hurkacz now moves forward to face France’s Arthur Rinderknech. American powerhouse Ben Shelton, who advanced with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6(6) win over Daniel Altmaier, now eyes a realistic path to the semifinals. In the upper half, second seed Alexander Zverev remains the highest-ranked player left standing after overcoming local favorite Yibing Wu.

Emerging talent shines

The shockwaves have also made room for breakthrough performers. Japanese 19-year-old qualifier Rei Sakamoto, who ousted Andrey Rublev in straight sets, continues his dream run into the weekend. As third-round matches begin under the magnolia roof at Qizhong Arena, every surviving player understands that the Shanghai Masters crown is there for the taking.
