Singapore Grand Prix: Max Verstappen takes Sprint pole ahead of George Russell

Red Bull edges Mercedes by 0.120 seconds under the Marina Bay lights while Antonelli qualifies seventh.

Singapore Grand Prix: Max Verstappen takes Sprint pole ahead of George Russell

Why this grid matters

Sprint weekends provide zero margin for error, and Friday night at the Marina Bay Street Circuit delivered immediate fireworks. Max Verstappen claimed pole position for Saturday’s 100-kilometer Sprint, steering his Red Bull to a lap of 1:31.156 under the humid Singapore night skies.

How the front rows formed

Verstappen edged Mercedes driver George Russell by just 0.120 seconds. Russell, who had topped the lone Free Practice session earlier in the day using an older aerodynamic setup, extracted maximum performance on soft compound tires to secure his third Sprint front-row start of the season. Charles Leclerc finished third for Ferrari (+0.243), followed closely by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri (+0.298) and Lando Norris (+0.431).

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli endured a challenging session. Running an upgraded aerodynamic package, the 20-year-old Italian encountered traffic on his out-lap and ran wide at Turn 14, settling for seventh position (+0.693). Antonelli holds an 84-point lead over Russell in the drivers’ championship (320 to 236), but starting four rows back will test his racecraft in Saturday’s Sprint.

What is at stake on Saturday

The Singapore Sprint begins at 17:00 local time on Saturday. With eight championship points awarded to the winner down to one point for eighth place, Russell has an immediate opportunity to cut into Antonelli’s points advantage before the main Grand Prix qualifying session later that evening.
