100-kilometer sprint begins under the Marina Bay lights before main Grand Prix qualifying tests Antonelli.

Singapore Grand Prix: Max Verstappen and George Russell headline Saturday Sprint

Why Saturday in Singapore is pivotal

Saturday at the Marina Bay Street Circuit delivers a unique double-header of high-octane racing. As twilight turns to darkness, the 20-car field contests the 2026 season’s final 100-kilometer Sprint, followed just hours later by the high-stakes qualifying session for Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix.

The front-row showdown

Max Verstappen commands the lead from the front of the grid after producing a razor-sharp 1:31.156 lap in Sprint Qualifying on Friday. Starting directly alongside him on the front row is Mercedes’ George Russell, who trailed by just 0.120 seconds. With the run to Turn 1 tight and unforgiving, the start will define the race for eight valuable championship points. Charles Leclerc starts third in his Ferrari, ready to pounce should the front pair compromise one another into the opening complex.

Antonelli’s recovery mission

All eyes in the paddock will be on championship leader Kimi Antonelli. The 20-year-old Mercedes sensation endured a scruffy qualifying effort on Friday, encountering slow traffic before sliding wide at Turn 14 to settle for seventh on the grid (+0.693). Antonelli holds an 84-point championship buffer over Russell (320 to 236), but overtaking around Marina Bay is notoriously tricky. If Russell scores maximum points and Antonelli finishes outside the top five, the title race takes on a decidedly tenser complexion.

Qualifying under the floodlights

Once the Sprint concludes and cars are serviced, drivers return to the track at 21:00 local time for main Grand Prix qualifying. Setting pole position for Sunday’s 62-lap endurance test around Singapore is often half the battle won.
