Singapore Grand Prix Sunday: Verstappen and Russell hunt Marina Bay glory
After sweeping the Sprint and pole, Verstappen leads the pack into 62 grueling night laps as Antonelli fights from fourth.
Verstappen’s Saturday sweep sets the stage
Max Verstappen delivered an emphatic masterclass on Saturday at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, taking maximum points in the afternoon 100-kilometer Sprint before capturing pole position for the Grand Prix under the floodlights with a blistering 1:29.525 lap.
The Red Bull driver proved uncatchable on single-lap pace and race management alike. George Russell took second in both sessions for Mercedes, finishing 1.8 seconds back in the Sprint and trailing by just 0.145 seconds in Q3. Together, the Dutchman and the Briton lock out the front row for Sunday’s 62-lap war of attrition.
The championship stakes for Antonelli
For championship leader Kimi Antonelli, Sunday evening presents the sternest test of his rookie campaign. The 20-year-old Italian rebounded from a disappointing seventh in Sprint qualifying to score four valuable points with a fifth-place Sprint finish, then produced a composed lap to secure fourth on Sunday’s grid (324 points total).
Starting behind Charles Leclerc’s third-placed Ferrari, Antonelli must balance aggression with supreme caution. Marina Bay is physically brutal, with ambient temperatures near 30 degrees Celsius and over 80% humidity. With Russell starting on the front row holding 243 points, an Antonelli podium finish would preserve a commanding points lead heading into the Americas triple-header.
Strategy and the inevitable Safety Car
In the 15-year history of the Singapore Grand Prix, the Safety Car has been deployed in every single race. Tire degradation on the abrasive street surface will likely mandate a two-stop strategy among the frontrunners, with teams monitoring undercut windows closely.
Behind the top four, McLaren teammates Lando Norris (fifth) and Oscar Piastri (seventh) will look to challenge Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton (sixth) for constructors’ points. But around Marina Bay, track position is supreme. When the five red lights extinguish at 20:00 local time, the dash into Turn 1 will dictate the tempo of Singapore’s most demanding night.
